Cason Award Winner Interviewed for BOOKMARK

"I washed my soul of adjectives," Rheta Grimsley Johnson, author of ENCHANTED EVENING BARBIE, told an audience of journalism students gathered in Studio A for a special taping. Johnson described her writing style as lean, adding,"I like verbs. Strong verbs. Biblical verbs." In this upcoming episode the biographer of PEANUTS creator Charles Schultz talks with host Dr. Don Noble about what it's like to write four columns a week, to follow Lewis Grizzard in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, bargain with God for a Barbie and much more. The new season begins in June on Alabama Public TV and at iTunes U.

Author Barry Hannah dies at 67

I was among the dwarves over in Alabama at the school, where almost everybody dies early. There is a poison in Tuscaloosa that draws souls towards the low middle. Hardly anybody has honest work. Queers full of backbiting and rumors set the tone. Nobody has ever missed a meal. Everybody has about exactly enough courage to jaywalk or cheat a wife or friend with a quote from Nietzsche on his lips.

Barry Hannah, “Ride, Fly, Penetrate, Loiter” in Captain Maximus

Barry Hannah, "the Dean of Southern literature," wasn't much on interviews. His earlier life had been tempestuous and he'd grown tired of living down the stories of revelry and excess. But in what is perhaps Hannah's last interview, he consented to talk with his longtime friend, Bookmark host, Don Noble. To watch the interview click here.

Glimpse

Whose hobby is cruising the Bahamas dressed up like Otis from the Andy Griffith show? Who is a little bit Erin Brokavich, a little bit Norma Rae? Whose commercial on youtube site took more hits than Muhammad Ali, and after being on The Ellen Show, became a trash youtube hit? You'll get a Glimpse on our new series. With two shows in production, Glimpse hopes to combine southern and story in every way you've imagined. And even ways you haven't.
